Mercedes-AMG GLE: 53 or 63 S?
Six cylinders or eight, SUV or Coupe: how the AMG GLE range is split.
AMG builds two versions of the GLE: the 53, with a turbocharged six, and the 63 S, with a hand-built V8. Both are offered as the GLE SUV and as the GLE Coupe with its sloping roof.
GLE 53
The GLE 53 pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with the EQ Boost mild-hybrid system, for 429 hp and 384 lb-ft. A 9-speed AMG automatic, 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive and AMG Ride Control+ air suspension are standard, and the quoted 0 to 60 mph time is 5.2 seconds. It is a mild hybrid: it does not plug in.
GLE 63 S
The 63 S uses a hand-built 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 603 hp and 627 lb-ft, also with EQ Boost and a 9-speed automatic. It adds an electronic limited-slip differential, six-piston front brakes and a Race drive mode.
The previous GLE 63 S Coupe, built up to 2019, used a 5.5-liter biturbo V8 with 577 hp and 561 lb-ft and a 7-speed automatic.
SUV or Coupe?
The Coupe has a sloping roofline and seats five. The GLE SUV has a more upright body and is offered with seating for seven.
Which one?
The 53 is the quicker-than-you-need everyday AMG. The 63 S is for the driver who wants the V8 and the extra hardware that comes with it. Compare the cars on our floor below: each page shows its full price and its original window sticker.
